Growing success for a young designer’s new brand!
We recently caught up with young designer Shivangi Lahoty, who was the 2014 Indian finalist in the SDC International Design Competition. We like to keep in touch with all our design competition finalists, so it was a particular pleasure to hear how her career has developed since taking part in the competition, with the launch of her new brand and a recent successful catwalk show launching her range for pregnant women.
Shivangi (photo: right) explained: “I quit my job end of November due to some health conditions which needed my urgent attention. After my surgery, I got back to the grind and started working on my label Inaaya by Shivangi Lahoty which is a sustainable brand that promotes fair trade practices and Indian textiles.
We try to use as many eco-friendly practices as possible in the process of producing our garments and also give 20% more than industry standards to the tailors and embroiderers”.
Fashion comes in all sizes and shapes. And Shivangi has proven it true with her collection which was showcased at the St Regis, Mumbai on the eve of Mother’s day exclusively for Bio Oil. The theme of the show was celebrating motherhood and the pregnant, would-be mothers did an astounding job at flaunting their baby bumps on ramp.
A beautiful pastel collection of Indian and indo-western, Shivangi created a special range of maternity clothing for these women keeping the garments light and breathable, yet fun and colourful. Indian super model Carol Gracias and TV actor and dancer, Shveta Salve walked the ramp as show-stoppers, making the show an even bigger hit.
When asked about the show, Shivangi said: “This is the most beautiful way I could have launched my label Inaaya and I am overwhelmed by the appreciation from these women and their families. Husbands have come to me after the show and thanked me for making their wives look so pretty. But honestly, I am thankful to them for making my first collection look so beautiful. This shall always remain very close to my heart”.
Shivangi is currently working also as the Creative Head for Earth5R’s upcoming initiative of using upcycling in fashion. Earth5R is one of India’s fastest growing environmental organisations. The image on the right shows one of her sessions educating women from the slums on how to use a sewing machine.
And if that wasn’t enough to keep her busy, Shivangi also runs a fashion blog simultaneously www.withloveinaaya.com where she posts about her experiments with fashion.
When asked about her hopes for the future, she commented: “my aim is to make Inaaya an internationally recognised label and well, as is obvious, grow with the workers and artisans. Together”.
We wish Shivangi continued success and look forward to hearing how her brand develops in the future.
With thanks to Sucharita Sarkar and Simran Juneja for the use of the catwalk show images.
