Success for a student from Belfast Met
We first met Matthew Lenehan at Belfast Metropolitan College when he took part in their in-house competition, using the SDC International Design Competition brief, and where he was announced as the winner. Matthew went on to enter the Irish heat of the SDC International Design Competition. On both occasions the judges were impressed with the standard of his work. We asked him to tell us about his SDC journey so far.
Matthew explained: “I knew I was very interested in entering a competition in association with SDC. The competition brief and prestigious judging panel made me determined to enter. After undertaking some research I realised this was a great chance to work under a particular brief in a competition setting. I relished the idea of making colour the most important aspect of my design and I knew it would be a great opportunity for constructive feedback of my work, from outside the college setting.
Initially, I concentrated on how vital colour was in designing. It changes mood, feeling and atmosphere. I wanted to incorporate aspects of my course work but knew I needed to concentrate on the brief of ‘making it personal’. I concentrated on producing a generic garment that I could personalise by adding pattern detail of swarming insects indigenous to the local buyer/wearer.
I found the competition itself exciting and standing side by side with my peers waiting for the results was both nerve wrecking and exhilarating. I was so grateful to win the in-house competition and realise that I would be travelling to Dublin for the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) event.
I worked further on my design concept and took on feedback I had received at the in-house competition. As I travelled on the train to Dublin I was feeling nervous as the competition attracts students at a much higher level of education than me and I wondered how my design would compare. The entire experience was amazing and I learnt so much and made some great friends and contacts. To my great joy I was placed runner up in the All Ireland competition and of course was very pleased.
I cannot say enough what a great positive experience it was to enter the competition and I hope to enter again in the future as I learnt so much”.
Matthew plans to continue his studies at Belfast Met with an HNC in Historical Costume. We wish him well. He can be seen in the front row of the image above, with other prize winners from the recent SDC event at NCAD in Dublin.
