Colour Experience visits The Piece Hall
SDC’s Colour Experience team have recently been working with The Piece Hall in Halifax, UK, on a range of educational activities. We asked the Learning team at The Piece Hall to tell us more.
“Our partnership with the SDC Colour Experience began almost two years ago, when we were at the start of our journey here at The Piece Hall, Halifax. We worked with the Colour Experience team to find out more about the history of dyeing and the existing work they do with school groups. We were lucky enough to shadow a school workshop all about Light and Colour and we were so impressed with the content and delivery of the workshop and facilities at the Colour Experience. We then had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a CPD session where we had a go at various types of natural dyeing. This research really helped to shape our own learning programme.
The partnership with SDC and their wider education team has since grown and the team – Richard Ashworth, Lisa Roberts, Shelley Hollingdrake and Sue Hulbert – visited us here at The Piece Hall for a reciprocal day of CPD. The team found out how our first year of opening was going and learnt more about the work we do with schools and resources which we have had created for our learning programme. It was a fantastic opportunity to share experiences and to develop ideas for the future.
With British Science Week approaching fast, we decided to collaborate and offer a Light and Colour show here at The Piece Hall, delivered by The Colour Experience team in the inflatable planetarium on loan from the Star Centre in Keighley. Excitement grew as we tested the planetarium and found out what an amazing learning space it was, somewhere that we knew would be popular with local schools and group. The workshops were delivered as part of a two hour session alongside a STEM themed tour of the building. Six diverse local schools and groups including primary, home education and special educational needs learners visited the event along with colleagues from other local cultural organisations and teachers from our Teacher Advisory Panel.
The session focused on colours, rainbows, light travelling in straight lines and light splitting. It was a fantastic interactive and hands-on session which was enjoyed by 86 young people over two days. The feedback we have had has been really positive and it was great for us to offer a different type of workshop led by a team of experts”.
The feedback from schools was really positive: ‘A thoroughly enjoyable experience for myself and my class. Thank you very much.’ (St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School)
