Why write a blog?

For a number of reasons. We are constantly looking for new and relevant ways in which to engage with SDC members and users, and a blog seemed an excellent way of ensuring this engagement could be a two way process. We wanted to create a space to discuss the issues, ideas, challenges and opportunities relating to colour.

Success for SDC bursary recipient

As an educational charity, SDC is committed to supporting people in their colour education journey. Occasionally students may need a helping hand financially and we have funding available to offer a limited number of bursaries each year.

Jo Horton is a Senior Lecturer in Mixed Media Textiles at De Montfort University – one of SDC’s college members – in Leicester. She is also an SDC bursary recipient and was recently highly commended in the Embroiderers’ Guild Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence in Embroidery and Design for 2017.

Meet the judges

The UK final of the SDC International Design Competition 2017 takes place in York on 19th May as part of SDC’s Day of Celebration. We will be welcoming the finalists from SDC’s regions in the Midlands, London, North of England, Scotland and West of England/South Wales. The main focus for the competition is colour, and this year the students have been challenged to include the theme ‘design for a circular economy.’ We’re pleased to introduce the judges.

What colour are you? A focus on black

Black is the darkest colour, the result of the absence of or complete absorption of light.  Like white and grey it is an achromatic colour meaning literally ‘without colour’.

While white represents purity and innocence, black symbolises power and secrecy and is often associated with darkness and evil and is the traditional colour of witchcraft. “Black magic” implies magic for ‘evil purposes’. Black and white are often used to describe opposites; light and darkness, good and evil.
