The Tolkein Tapestries

I first became involved with the Tapestry Museum in Aubusson a few years ago. We happened to be covering a show about an hour away, so it was an opportunity not to be missed.

After speaking to staff at the museum, it became obvious to them, I was not just a normal visiting tourist. Jean and I were taken behind the scenes and were involved in technical discussions, even helping with some technical translating of terms and processes; knowing what these were we could give the English version. We were invited to see their apprentices at work and go to other ateliers and dyehouses in the area.

A UK Colour Journey

SDC’s Marketing and Membership Officer, Angela Ackroyd, gives her account of the UK heats of the SDC International Design Competition, which took place earlier this year.

The last of the snow melted away just in time for my UK colour tour taking in the UK regional heats of the International Design Competition 2018; this involves long but energising days spent with nervous students ready to face a judging panel and anxious to make the most of the unique opportunity the competition offers; presenting their work and persuading the judges that their designs fulfil this year’s brief ‘Colour Communication’.

Scottish heat of the SDC International Design Competition 2018

The Scottish heat of the SDC International Design Competition took place earlier this year, and we were pleased to welcome Marion Whitelaw as one of the judges. we asked her to tell us about the experience.

“It was a pleasure once again to act as lead judge with the panel which included Anne Bell, Green Grove Weavers and Eliza Kesuma, Moody Monday for the Scottish heat of the SDC International Design Competition, kindly hosted by Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.
