The Mike Crabtree Memorial Lecture was a big success again this year, building on everyone’s enjoyment of last year.
The evening started off with a hot buffet which was enjoyed by everyone in attendance, over 50 people sharing a meal over stories and experiences. A broad spectrum of people had gathered to listen to Dr Christine Holdstock’s fascinating talk on “a history of dyes, from ancient Egypt to cancer treatment”. After the meal, formalities had to be undertaken, and it was time to present a couple of awards. North of England Chair Dr Muriel Rigout took the floor and introduced SDC Past President Trevor Larkins.

India is the second largest cotton producer, consumer and exporter in the world. Textiles contribute to about 14% GDP and 14.4% to fabric exports. The fine and longest staple cotton Suvin Ratna (Cotton Association of India), Jewel of Cotton and Hemp or industrial hemp (BOHECO) are gaining importance besides standards, compliance, certification and sustainability. In view of this SDC EC in association with B D Somani Institute organised this seminar.

This half day seminar was presented by SDC’s Midlands region and took place at De Montfort University. It began with an Opening Address by Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester.
Sir Peter has been Mayor of Leicester for six years and feels very much a part of the city as he was once a student here at a college which has now become part of De Montfort University.
