As an educational charity, SDC is committed to supporting people in their colour education journey. Occasionally students may need a helping hand financially and we have funding available to offer a limited number of bursaries each year.
Jo Horton is a Senior Lecturer in Mixed Media Textiles at De Montfort University – one of SDC’s college members – in Leicester. She is also an SDC bursary recipient and was recently highly commended in the Embroiderers’ Guild Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence in Embroidery and Design for 2017.
Each year the SDC International Design Competition attracts hundreds of entries worldwide.
However, not everyone who is interested in the competition is eligible to enter. We were therefore excited to be contacted by tutor Claire Concannon from Belfast Metropolitan College who had read this year’s brief ‘Making it Personal’ and thought it a great project but her students were too young to enter. Claire asked if we would consider supporting an ‘in-house’ competition working with the brief.
SDC member Rebecca Diggle is a Decorative Arts graduate from Nottingham Trent University. She won the UK heat of SDC’s International Design Competition in 2013, and was runner up in the grand final which took place in Mumbai, India. Below she writes about a recent internship SDC organised for her at Nutmeg, and which was supported by an SDC bursary.
On the 20th October I started a four-week internship with Nutmeg, the children’s clothing line of Wm Morrison Supermarket. This position was organised through the SDC and Nutmeg and was a wonderful opportunity for me to experience design in a commercial situation.
