Introduction to Colour

Colour surrounds us and yet it is complex. How much do we really understand about where colour comes from and how we see it?  The language we use to describe colour is fairly basic and that is a problem if you work in an industry where you need to communicate colour effectively.

Ideal for both individuals and companies, Introduction to Colour will provide you with the basic concepts of colour. If you deal with colour as part of your job then this new short course will build your skills and confidence and enhance your communication and decision-making skills.

The course is divided into 11 short video tutorials, which means that you can study at a time that’s convenient to you. Topics include:

  • Light – what it is and how it affects colour
  • Additive and subtractive colour
  • Reflection and colour
  • The language of colour
  • Controlling the colour we see
  • Metamerism and colour constancy

The course is delivered through the Colour Network, SDC’s virtual learning platform. It finishes with an online quiz and certificate for successful students.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Define and communicate colour
  • Explore colour perception including the relationship between light, colour, the eye and the brain
  • Apply your knowledge to colour matching and standardisation
  • Communicate the properties of colour

If you work with colour in the textile industry or if you’re studying colour at university then this course is relevant to you. This is the first in a series of short courses that will be available over the coming months as part of SDC’s colour education pathway. And if you’re an SDC member, you are entitled to a 15% discount – please ask for details!

Also available on the Colour Network are a series of free short courses. These short videos are designed to help you learn about the coloration of textiles by giving an introduction to some of the fibres and dyes available. Take a look at what’s available, with more courses being added all the time. You’ll need to set up a free account in order to view them, which is quick and easy to do.
